St. John Ambulance Sri Lanka governed by the St. John Ambulance Association & Brigade in Sri Lanka established in 1906, is a Non-Governmental Organization registered as a Social Service / Non Governmental Organization under Voluntary Services Organization Act No. 3 1 of 1980 as amended by Act No. 08 of 1998 of the Government of Sri Lanka. It is also a Government Approved Charity Vide Gazette No. 193 of 05-12—1975.

MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION

To encourage and promote all work of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger without distinction of race, class, or creed and extension of the great principle of the St. John Ambulance in its motto ‘Pro Utilitate Hominum’
OBJECTIVES

Trust Us To Be There To Help All & Make Things Well Again

To educate and train members to serve the public in practice of First Aid, Nursing, Primary Health Care, Disaster Preparedness and Management, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety and to engage in Youth Development and Leadership training and other allied or ancillary subjects.

To prepare, publish and distribute textbooks and other training aids to facilitate such instruction and the organization of examinations and tests for the purpose of issuing certificates of proficiency in such subjects.

To organize, educate and equip men, women and young persons to undertake, on a voluntary basis, either as individuals or as organised groups, First Aid, Nursing and allied activities including community care, in the street, public places, hospitals, homes, places of work, sites of disaster or elsewhere as occasion may require for the relief, transport, comfort or welfare of those in need.

To afford opportunities for holders of approved First Aid Certificates to meet together for training and practice under-qualified members of the Medical and Nursing professions with the object of combining individual efforts in the service of the public.

Issue of special Certificates, Souvenirs, Medals, etc. with the approval of Commissioner and Commander for the appreciation of special services rendered by the members and for any special subjects/Course conducted by the Brigade.

To provide trained personnel to give assistance to central and local Government Departments and to the Armed Forces at times of emergency in peace or war, specifically in Sri Lanka.

To instruct males and females in First Aid, Nursing and other subjects conducive to the education of good citizens.

To provide ambulance transport and medical comforts and organize transport by ambulance.

To provide ancillary services to the aged (both male and female) and the handicapped.

Our enduring story goes back to 11th century Jerusalem, where the first Knights of St John set up a hospital to care for sick pilgrims.  

 1880s 

The St John Ambulance Brigade was formed in 1887, as a voluntary organisation offering free medical care. Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee saw the Brigade in action in public for the first time in 1887.

1890s

The end of the 1890s saw over 2000 St John Ambulance volunteers offer medical assistance during the South African Wars.

1900s

St John Ambulance volunteers performed their first duty for a major sporting event at the 1908 London Olympics, marking the beginning of a long-standing relationship between the charity and the sporting world.

1910s

The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 saw St John Ambulance join forces with the Red Cross to form the Joint War Committee, providing medical care for war casualties in hospitals in England and overseas.

1920s

In the 1920s, the St John Ambulance Cadets were formed for girls and boys aged 11 to 18, offering first aid training to those who were too young to join an adult division.

1930s

At the Coronation of King George VI in 1937, St John Ambulance volunteers provided first aid treatment to 9,000 members of the public.

1940s

During the Second World War, the Joint War Organisation once again came together, to provide voluntary first aid to the injured. In 1948, the formation of the NHS altered the role of St John Ambulance to one of support for local ambulance trusts in times of need.

1950s

St John Ambulance, the British Red Cross Society and St Andrew’s Ambulance Association published a First Aid Manual together in 1958. Now in its tenth edition, the guide gives step by step instructions on how to treat over one hundred medical conditions and injuries.   

1960s

Beatlemania created a new type of casualty for St John Ambulance, as volunteers treated their first cases of hysteria in young women across the country.

 1970s

The 1970s were a period of unrest, and St John Ambulance volunteers provided first aid to the injured in a number of dangerous situations such as riots.

 1980s

New first aid regulations were introduced for the workplace and St John Ambulance has offered first aid at work training ever since. The Badgers program for young children was introduced in 1987.

 1990s

On 31 March 1990, central London saw the largest demonstration of the Poll Tax Riots, in Trafalgar Square. Volunteers provided first aid to 102 injured people, taking 46 to hospital for further treatment.

 2000s

2005 saw St John Ambulance support the London Ambulance Service during the 7/7 bombings on London’s transport system, providing emergency transport and first aid where it was most needed.

 2010s

In 2010, we launched initiatives including the First Aid Awards and Save a Life September to raise awareness of the importance of first aid.
